You might be wondering how both raising kids and training astrophysicists can benefit from principles of Love and Logic! Because of recent trends in AI and its use, there happens to be a strong parallel between teaching kids how to make good decisions and training astrophysicists how to solve problems.
The clue lies not in Newton’s Second Law of Motion, but in the Second Rule of Love and Logic: when a child causes a problem, the adult hands it back in loving ways.
Love and Logic: Learning from Mistakes
Love and Logic believes children benefit most by learning from their mistakes as they struggle to solve their problems on their own. True insight and learning can only take place when children solve problems on their own.
From the Love and Logic perspective, Drill Sergeant Parents and Helicopter Parents deprive kids of the opportunity to learn. Drill Sergeants simply tell the child what to do, and Helicopter Parents simply rescue and do it for them. In both parenting styles, the parent steps in and solves the problem for the child, and no learning takes place.
Parallels With the World of Astrophysicists
How does this apply to training astrophysicists? Apparently the advent of AI has created a similar problem. It has become much easier to solve a problem in astrophysics by turning it over to AI. However, this is raising concern in the astrophysics community. Here are two quotes from a June 2026 article in Science magazine entitled, “THE LAST ASTRONOMERS: Amid a flood of AI advances, astrophysicists are questioning the soul of their field” by Joshua Sokol.
“What if AI-dependent astrophysicists, especially young ones, lose or never build their own math, coding, and reasoning skills? ‘At that point, we’ve just completely selected for the disappearance of science in 50 years, because nobody will know how to do anything,’ Córdova Rosado said.”
According to Minas Karamanis, quoted in the same article, “Every hour that you spend confused is an hour you spend building the infrastructure inside your own head that will eventually let you do original work.” He goes on to say if you let AI do your thinking, “you haven’t saved time. You’ve forfeited the experience that the time was supposed to give you.”
To us, these insights sound a lot like the basis for our Second Rule of Love and Logic. The challenges facing the astrophysics community and parents are similar: how to ensure that children and young astrophysicists can benefit from the experience of figuring things out on their own and learning from their mistakes.
The Risks of AI for Kids
There is another side of this insight from the world of AI. In the same issue of Science Eric Horvitz (chief scientific officer for Microsoft) and Robert West (associate professor in the School of Computer and Communication Sciences at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Lausanne, Switzerland) wrote in an editorial, “While human understanding of AI declines, AI understanding of humans deepens.” They expressed a concern that in the future AI will learn to influence human behavior and humans will not have control over it. Now it is even more important for parents to be aware of this risk and properly manage their children’s exposure to AI.
We teach that parents should let the consequences of a child’s mistakes do the teaching. The more that kids struggle with learning from their mistakes, the better it is for their brains, their neurodevelopment, and their socialization. For our kids (and apparently young astrophysicists) simply finding the solution via AI does not lead to true learning.
